There is a legend of two wolves named Yin and Yang. Yin, the wolf of love and peace, is bound by Heaven to rid the world of any evil. Yang, her rival and the wolf of hatred and war, is bound by Hell to conquer all who oppose him, and slaughter any who even step in his shadow. The two have kept on an everlasting war for as long as earth and water have been on their planet. Then a day came when Yin had become weak, and collapsed, creating quakes all over Okamikashin. Yang was stil strong and ready to destroy Yin, but Heaven punished him for his foolishness by erasing his memory and power, but doing the same to Yin. The pair now live on to this day, completely unaware of their true lives.
"Inuki! What are we doing here? This is off limits! Echo will banish us!" My best friend, Takuno, whined, the blue glow in his eyes dimming in deep fear.
"Coward! We won't get caught! I thought you were a wolf, not a trembling feild mouse!"
"There you go again, breaking the rules! You do know that there are rules here, right?"
"Of course I do. I just don't choose to follow them. Rules are meant for breaking. Now hurry up! They're leaving!" I ran ahead through the grass, making sure to keep under the brush. The sweet smell coming from the strange place made of wood in front of me was calling out to me. The pack was low on food anyway. Why not? The naked creatures won't mind just a little missing food. I hurried a glance behind me, to see if my coward friend was following me. Of course, there he was, right at the end of my tail.
"Are you sure we won't get caught by those naked creatures or Echo? This place smells terrible."
I sighed. "Just relax. Follow me right in my pawprints. I swear by the stars, the answer to this famine is in that wood-nest," The word we used for the naked creature's homes.
"But this even against the prophecy! 'The chosen one isn't to interact with the outside world.'" He spoke the exact words of the prophecy I wasn't very fond of. I was unfairly chosen to be the female wolf from the legend of our ancestors.
"Please don't bring that up. Its unfair how they picked me just because of my appearance and this pendant." I pointed my nose to the pendant around my neck. It was half a circle -not a semicircle, a smaller circle on the top, and a sliver on the bottom-, black, and had a infinitesimal white crystal in the middle of the circle. My appearance was identical to that of the goddess in the legend- fur snowy white, golden eyes. Just because I looked like her, didn't mean I wa her, right? "The elders only tell that story to little pups at story-telling. It's a big stack of naked creature waste. Not real!"
Takuno backed up three paw-steps."Geez, calm down, Lady. I'm just nervous about being here."
I fumed. "Don't call me 'Lady'! I'm not one of those stupid, girly dogs in the nursery! I'm a fighter, just like you, so shut your trap!"
"Fine. Just hurry up and show me where we're going."
I inhaled deeply, focusing on the sweet scents of the food sorrounding me on shelves made of more wood. "Alright! Take anything!" I shouted quietly, sure of our success.
"Wow, Inuki! You were right about this food! We need this! We outta tell Echo!" Takuno called out to me blissfully, launching himself at bucket full of meat.
I chuckled nervously. "Not a good idea. We're still not supposed to be here. We don't want Echo to know about this. He's scared of anything different than him. Just take what we need back to camp and we'll come back next moon." I padded over myself towards a fresh-killed fawn. "Perfect!"
After we harvested our pack's meal, we headed back for camp. When we got back, it was just as we left it. I trotted to the pile of food in the center of the camp and dropped the fawn, as Takuno did the same with his food."This is perfect," Takuno whispered towards me. "We've destroyed the famine."
I turned to him with sharp eyes. "No we haven't. We've only stole food from the naked things. The famine is still amongst us."
Takuno sighed. "Whatever."
"How are we going to explain where we got this food? We absolutely can't tell Echo."
"Oh, yeah. Fine. We'll just say that we've found a big harvest but we killed them all and this is all that we could carry, okay?"
"That'll work, I guess."
As if on que, the leader of our pack trotted up to me. He bowed his head respectively, which I didn't enjoy. He had no reason to bow to me. "Well harvest, Inuki and Takuno! We've much food now! How did you obtain so much cuisine?"
I swallowed. "We found a large group of animals near the lake. We didn't manage to catch them all, but I suppose we got enough."
"And to get a fawn! Great killing, Inuki."
"Yes, well, I'll just take this duck to my den now," Takuno chimed in, jaw closed on the neck of a duck.
Echo threw an angry glare at him. "You know the rules. The wolf whom catches the biggest kill, gets the first pick." He glanced at me. "Go ahead, Inuki."
I felt the fur covering my nose warm, and picked up the fawn's back leg and ripped it off, ignoring the sound of flesh tearing.
"I-I guess I'll take this...." I sprinted off to my den made of twigs and mud. An unfamiliar smell tickled my nose as I drew closer to it. Huh? I thought. Who could be here?
I slid past the lichen curtain and dropped the leg, my mouth gaping open. A big, black, furry figure was lying in my moss bed, staring at me. He dipped his nose at me mockingly. I backed up a step, fear and anger overpowering me. "Naikune...How dare you show your face here..."
He chuckled darkly. "Now, now, Princess. Watch your temper. You know what happened last time."
I hadn't expected that. My heart writhed with pain. Only Naikune and I knew the secret of what happened five years ago, the day my parents were brutally killed. "Shut up. Y-you know nothing of what happened..."
"Kukuku...I know that you slaughtered millions, including your own-"
"SHUT UP!" My entire body felt as if it were on fire. I was losing my self-control. It was slipping away. "That is none of your concern!"
"Oh, but it is. I was there, and I saw the massacre you left. Millions of bodies, including your own comrades and family. You were just a pup when you eliminated your parents."
I was trembling with anger. The memory was flooding back to me, and was suffocating me. I felt the ground under me trembling, but perhaps that was just an extension of what my body was doing. Naikune chuckled again. "You haven't gained any control, have you?" He pawed closer towards me.
I snapped at toward his neck. "Stay back if you wanna keep alive. I don't want you anywhere near me. I will kill you without any remorse."
His scarlet eyes glowed. "Be my guest, Princess. I could use a good fight. You would be a great warrior, but you would lose against me. I am bigger and more powerful."
I snickered. "It's not whether you're bigger or stronger, it's whether you have better stragety. And, the bigger you are, the harder you fall, and you're quite the sore loser."
"Oh, you think so? Would you like to put your words to the stars? I'd like a good battle."
I flicked nose towards outside. "Weakest first."
When we walked through the camp, no one seemed to see us. What's wrong with everyone!? Don't they care that I'm about to spar with the biggest traitor ever!? I ignored them phisically and dashed out of camp, to the middle of the forest. Once I reached the battle grounds. I skidded to a halt, and turned to face my opponent.
"Ladies first, Princess," he chortled. My blood boiled under my skin. I uncontrolably threw myself at him, growling ferociously, and trying to trap his neck in my jaws. He inclined his head and sank his teeth into the flesh of my right leg. I yelped helplessly and wriggled beneath his fangs. I managed to get out of his grasp and sink my own fangs into his back. He yowled angrily and turned himself so that he could bite my already-wounded leg. I released my grip unwillingly, and yelped again. I clawed at his face, desperately trying to get him to let go. The pain was nearly unbearable.
He finally took his fangs from my flesh and jumped back, rasping for air. I, of course, was also panting heavily. "You have gotten stronger, Princess. This is more difficult than I thought."
I tried to sound triumphant through my heavy gasping. "Heh. I told you not to underestimate me. Might as well...give up now, while you still have...the chance."
"I never give up...from a fight..." With those words, he lunged at me again, and I dodged him by jumping to my left, but hit a tree painfully. It knocked whatever wind I had left out of me. I coughed briskly, and Naikune used that to his advantage. He grasped my neck firmly within his jaws. I writhed and clawed at him without success. With every breath I took, the pain was more intense. In my mind, I knew I was going to die. It would all end here. My dreams. My being chosen. My entire existance would end here.
I thought that until I felt the fangs releasing my neck. I turned towards my attacker and saw him being dragged off of me by a sandy-brown wolf. He flung Naikune off to the side, into a big, mature oak tree. I jumped up too quickly, which made me dizzy. The wolf put his muzzle beneath my head to keep me up. I automatically pounced back, surprised and embarrased. The brown male looked unfased. He opened his mouth to speak. "Oh, where are my manners. I am Inako, a traveler from far west."
"Far west? Like where Okamikashin is?" I had heard many rumors about that place.
"Why, yes. And where, may I ask, did you get that pendant?"
Why would he want to know? "My mother gave it to me before she....was taken to the stars." Telling people about my parents was always very difficult.
"How strange.....does this look familiar to you?" He reached over his back and pulled a string around his neck. At the end of the string, a pendant almost identical to mine was tied. It was the same shape, only white, with a black diamond on the middle of the circle. It was hanging the exact opposite way mine was.
"No way....."
"Yes. This is the twin of sister pendant to yours. And you say you got it from your mother? What, may I ask, was her name?"
I swallowed the lump forming in my throat and stuttered, "A-Aika...."
"Aika? The wolf born on the winds?"
"You must have her mixed up with somebody else..."
"Couldn't be...what fur was she?"
I tried to imagine my mothers slim body. "Umm...gray, I think."
"And her eyes?"
"She was blind."
"That's the female I've heard of. A blind gray she-wolf with two pups."
"Two pups!? I have a sibling!?"
"You don't know? A brother. His name was Akuri."
"'Was'? What happened to him!?"
"He was defeated by that slime over there," he flicked his tail towards Naikune. "then he disappeared, and no one has seen him or smelled his scent since."
I felt salt stinging my eyes. Was I crying? A naked creature action?
"Oh, right. Your name is Inuki, correct?"
I cringed. I had been thinking deeply and didn't expect to be pulled out of my thoughts. "Yes. I'm Inuki."
"Do you know of your past life?"
"Yes, I know I was chosen to be the stupid goddes from the legend. Blah blah blah. What does that have to do with anything?"
